OVERVIEW
The 2025 China Dragon Silver Coin is the first silver coin issued by China to feature the Chinese dragon totem, with a total mintage of 2 million pieces.
It was issued for the whole world, to promote and showcase the spirit and confidence of the Chinese nation. The obverse bears the national totem — the Chinese Dragon; the reverse bears the national symbol — the Great Wall.
Being the first year of issue, the dies and materials were still being refined, leaving a unique "silver flow" trace on a tiny number of coins. And because each Encapsulated Dragon carries a unique 5-digit serial number, collectors have developed a rich number culture based on Chinese love for auspicious digits.

At the 2026 Coin of the Year (COTY) Awards, the 2025 China Dragon Silver Coin claimed two top prizes — the first time a coin from the People's Republic of China has stood atop the world stage.

VARIETIES
The China Dragon Silver Coin comes in four varieties. The Encapsulated Dragon is the most special of all.
The most basic form. Coins issued as bare pieces or in mint tubes, retaining their original factory state — the mainstay for entry-level collecting and NGC submission.
Card-mounted versions issued for overseas/HK-Macao regions and key domestic cities:
A set of two — one Dragon Card, one Great Wall Card. Some banks also issue bank-branded smart card versions under license.
Specially slabbed by China Gold Coin Inc. (CGCI). Only 50,000 pieces issued, each with a unique serial number #00001 – #50000.
VARIANTS
As the first year of issue, dies and materials were still being refined, leaving "silver flow" on the dragon's tail of a tiny number of coins. Collectors named them by the count, size and position of the flow.
One silver flow, named for its larger size and prominent position. The grand variant among single-tail coins.
One silver flow, finer and more subtle in position. The delicate variant among single-tail coins.
Two silver flows, named for their larger size and visible position. The heavyweight among double-tail coins.
Two silver flows, finer in size. The nimble variant among double-tail coins, all the rarer.
Three silver flows — extremely rare, the pinnacle of variants, highly sought after.
No "quadruple silver tail" has been found to date. Silver-tail dragons are scarce, commanding prices far above ordinary non-tailed coins, and adding endless fun to the hobby.
GRADING
Condition varies across production, shipping and trading. Professional grading services authenticate condition, making it easier for new collectors to judge quality.
Take NGC, one of the most internationally recognized grading services, as an example. Bare coins are submitted and graded on a 70-point scale: 70 perfect, then 69, 68, and so on.
Because of the strict submission window, First Day and First Month labels cannot be reproduced or re-submitted later — their numbers are fixed at the time of submission, all verifiable on NGC's official website.
NUMBER LORE
Each Encapsulated Dragon carries a unique 5-digit serial number (#00001 – #50000). Collectors group them by Chinese auspicious meanings, forming distinct circles and plays.
The only number starting with "5" is #50000 — the closing number of the series, the natural "dragon's tail, phoenix's head."

These five digits remain valid digits when rotated 180° (0→0, 1→1, 8→8, 6→9, 9→6). Read one way, it's one coin; flip the certificate, it's another valid number — one coin, two readings.
These four digits all contain a "circle," symbolizing togetherness. Numbers made only of them are perfectly round — the Chinese ideal of reunion and harmony.
The five layers add up to exactly 50,000 — interlocked, each rarer than the last.
Numbers containing "3" — "3" sounds like "mountain" — combined with 0, 1, 6, 8, 9: mountains of gold and silver, a solid fortune.
Digits only from 0, 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, with at least one 3 and one 1.

Note: Counts marked "≈" are theoretical values by definition. Boundary numbers such as #50000 follow collector consensus. By the way, Gold Mountain King and Inverted Number both totaling 994 is no coincidence — "3" and "1" are symmetric as the leading digit. The world of numbers is truly wondrous.
